In an almost similar stunt as the national parliament, Makerere University Guild Speaker Imran Kasujja has decried the gross absenteeism amongst members of the 82nd Guild Representative Council (GRC).
While in the end of semester session that had less than 40 members out of the about 106 members of the house, the Speaker said the business of entering to register for allowances and leave afterwards would nolonger be tolerated.
“I want the house to bear me witness to this as it is unbecoming for any student representative to degrade their constituency in such a way. These members need to be thoroughly dealt with.” Kasujja said.
It is during this particular session that some members of the guild cabinet issued accountability for their respective ministries and were subjected to counter fire from the rest of the members as regards their purpoted expenditure.
Members of the cabinet traded in blames as they said that the Dean of Students and the University bursar further chop the otherwise passed budgets in the guild sessions.
The minister in charge of Culture and Mobilisation in particular said that out of the shillings 4,500,000, he was only allocated shillings 900,000 by the Dean of Students to organise the now controversial Cultural Gala where Basoga Nsete claimed massive rigging after they lost by one point.
Session absenteeism is not only in Makerere as even the national parliament is faced with the same woes since overtime, the Speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga decries absenteeism from sessions.
