Uganda Christian University (UCU) has announced a mandatory dress code policy for all Bachelor of Laws (LLB) students at its Main and Kampala campuses, set to take effect on Monday, June 5, 2025. The directive, issued by the Dean of the School of Law, aims to reinforce student discipline and align personal presentation with the values of the legal profession and the University’s Christian ethos.
According to an internal memorandum circulated on May 26, 2025, all LLB students will be required to wear black suits every Monday and Thursday without exception. Students who fail to comply will be barred from accessing classrooms, the main library, and School of Law offices.
The specifics of the dress code mandate that:
- The suits must be black and accompanied by a long-sleeved white shirt and a necktie for male students, while black shoes are required for all. Shoes or suits in other colors, as well as open footwear like sandals or canvas shoes, will not be allowed.
- Well-groomed hair is compulsory every day of the week. Coloured or tinted hairstyles are explicitly prohibited, and any styles deemed “unacceptable” by the administration will also result in denial of access to key academic facilities.
The university administration clarified that this policy is not just about appearance, but about preparing students for the standards expected in the legal profession.
“The purpose of the above-mentioned measures is to buttress clear expectations for appropriate LLB student decorum within or outside the University setting, and to reflect the University’s precepts,” the memo states.
The move has sparked discussions among students, with opinions divided on whether the policy supports professional growth or imposes excessive control.
