Democratic Party (DP) president Nobert Mao has applauded Makerere University students for cherishing values of the party and making the institution a stronghold of the oldest political party in Uganda.
Officiating at the handover of the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) Makerere chapter, Mao thanked Makerere students for overtime embracing DP values of “truth and justice”, and repeatedly voting UYD candidates to guild presidency.
The former guild president also reminisced about his hotly contested election in which he tussled it against the then state-sponsored late Brig. Noble Mayombo.
“The late Mayombo was a candidate you wouldn’t love to face in an election,” Mao said. He described this race as one that was between the haves and have nots.
Mao observed that the incoming UYD executive has an uphill task to not just maintain what is there but to better the chapter and make it more successful than it is now.
He further pledged material and financial support to the chapter in the realisation of their goals and in the spreading of the values of the DP among youths.
The former presidential candidate oversaw the old executive of Isaac Otuku handover to a new one that will be steered by Law School GRC Steven Nuwagira.
The new executive also comprises of Complex hall’s GRC Shadia Bayiga (vice chairperson), Anne Mary Musiimenta (Speaker) and Kabanyoro hall chairman Abbey Lubega Akampa (General Secretary) among others.
