Authorities in Mukono have rounded up an operation to tie down a leader of the gang that has often left Uganda Christian University (UCU) students and neighboring residents cursing.
Allan Kitanda Lubugu, a 23 year-old mechanic was finally put behind bars following an outcry from students and other residents in Kawuga village.
Uganda Police Forces spokesperson Fred Enanga made the revelation adding that the suspect and his accomplices, who are still at large, have been attacking a number of UCU students and robbing them of their valuables.
“We have cases of attacks on students. There was also one case of rape which we registered,” Enanga said.
He said following several complaints, the Police in Mukono mounted an operation, where they arrested Lubugu, who has since named his accomplices. On the run are; Steven Semakula, Abdul Nsubuga, and an unidentified bodaboda rider.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the couple (Kakeeto and Nantongo) have for long been buying stolen gadgets, mainly electronics, supplied by Lubugu and his gang,” he added.
An assortment of exhibits has since been seized. These include flat irons, Samsung, Techno, and Infinix phones, television sets (flat screens), laptops, three handbags, three watches, and a gas cylinder cooker.
A variety of head face covers were also recovered from Lubugu’s hideout.
“We detained him and he is helping to lead us to other gang members. We think his arrest will bring some relief to the community and students,” Enanga added.
According to Joseph Kasato, a resident of Kawuga village, Lubugu was mainly targeting students with his group and grabbing their phones on their way to their residences.
“At times they would break into people’s homes and steal electronics. Sometimes, they would be violent to those who refuse to surrender their phones and take them forcefully,” he noted.
