• Annual Career Expo kicks off at Makerere University

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) annual Career Expo kicked off today at Makerere University, targeting to register at least 5000 finalists across the five major universities in Uganda.

The expo at Makerere University marks the start of a series of career events to be held, between 22nd, April and 29th, May, 2015, at five leading universities including Makerere University Business School, Ndejje University, Uganda Christian University, and Nkumba University.

The expo, now in its fourth year, is expected to attract over 20,000 students who will get professional career advice and engage with potential employers. Last year, the expo was attended by over 15,000 students.

The NSSF Deputy Managing Director Geraldine Ssali Busuulwa said the career expo is designed to prepare students for the work place environment and to equip them with knowledge and skills to increase their chances of getting employed.

“Students will also have an opportunity to register with NSSF so that when they get employment, they already have their social security numbers and do not have to register again. The career expo will also offer students professional career advice as well as give them an opportunity to engage with potential employers,” she said.

Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu expressed his appreciation to NSSF for the initiative, saying that students need to hear and learn from experienced professionals in the job market.

“Our students will be better prepared for the employment environment because of initiatives such as the NSSF Career Expo,” he said.

Notable speakers during the expo include Justice Mike Chibita, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Brig. Moses Rwakitarate of the UPDF, Assistant Inspector General of Police Edward Ochom, among others.

“Students can expect to hear from distinguished speakers with diverse professional backgrounds, as well as human resource professionals who know what it takes to succeed in the job market,” Ssali added.

Over the two days, the students will go through a series professional development workshops to prepare them for the work environment and also inform them about employment, graduate training and internship opportunities available to them.
