The National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Benjamin Akiso, has been declared the 21st Guild President of Kyambogo University after securing a decisive victory in the highly contested elections.
Akiso polled 3,585 votes, beating his closest rival, Tony Bwete, who garnered 2,340 votes, while Emmanuel Andama finished third with 1,103 votes.
The election, which was marked by intense campaigning and reports of state interference, ended in triumph for Akiso, whose supporters hailed the win as a victory for the students’ voice.
In a congratulatory message, NUP hailed Akiso’s win as a triumph over what they described as state brutality that marred his campaign trail.
“Congratulations, comrade Akiso Benjamin, on your victory as the 21st Guild President of Kyambogo University. The power of students has prevailed over the state brutality that featured in your entire campaign trail. Your victory belongs to the common students. Offer them deserving service in your tenure.”
Akiso’s victory is seen as a statement of defiance by students, who have increasingly leaned towards opposition-backed leadership in university politics.
As he takes office, all eyes are now on Akiso to see how he will fulfill his promises to the student body and navigate the challenges of university governance.
