This morning hundreds of Makerere University Students headed by their university guild president, Bala Bwiruka marched to the university’s freedom square to demonstrate. This time, over internship money.
The students are demonstrating over the institution’s failure to return their internship monies they are legally entitled to.
They [students] claim that over 2000 students who are supposed to receive Shs380,000 shillings each to facilitate their internship haven’t received it.
However the university insists that the internship money was reinvested, which could not be independently verified as the university administration offices are closed.
But the students insist that they should get their money since they offered the university an ultimatum that expired yesterday. Efforts to reach the Vice Chancellor for a comment were fruitless though.
Meanwhile, the DPC Wandegeya Police Station Brian Ampaire has confirmed that the situation at the institution is under control.
“The situation is normal and calm, however the students are rioting over their money.” DPC Wandegeya Ampaire said.
He adds that some students may have received their monies though there is an allegation it’s only a fraction of business students who haven’t received their internship money. DPC Ampaire further confirms that the students will probably pick their money today or it may have been put onto their bank accounts yesterday albeit many students haven’t crosscheck with their accounts.
