Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor has bragged about the status of fellow professors at the academic hill, revealing that they are now billionaires since they have ventured into entrepreneurship.
This, he said at the launch of edible insect products and standards on Monday March 28th, 2022 at the school of Food technology Nutrition and Bio-engineering Conference Hall under the theme; “Edible insects for increased food, income and nutrition security in Kenya and Uganda.”
“Our professors are now billionaires because they have become entrepreneurs.” VC Nawangwe said at the launch.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe further applauded the College of Agriculture and External Studies (CAES) for the development, emphazing that food security is still a huge burden in Africa. Nawangwe also called upon the private sector to do more research as the government supports such policies.
Dr Dorothy Nakimbugwe, who championed the research project, acknowledged the fact that 80% of insect parts are edible and malnutrition in Uganda can be overcome by such initiatives.
The edible insect products were generated from grasshoppers and crickets and they include Barbeque, salt and vinegar chirrup, composite flour and krickie flour.
The edible insect products, as already cited, could be the start towards the end of malnutrition in Uganda.
