Earlier last week, the report from the inspection done by East African community partner states National Medical and Dental Practitioners Regulatory Council ordered 3 universities to close their medical schools on what it termed as lack of minimum requirements to operate as medical schools.
The universities that are affected include Busitema University Medical School with 450 students, 117 students from Uganda Christian University (UCU) medical school in Mengo hospital and St Augustine University Medical School with 490 students totaling to 1057 affected students.
Those institutions were ordered to stop admitting new students in their medical schools and to ensure that the continuing students are distributed to other Universities like MUST, Makerere, Gulu, KIU that met the required requirements.
The criteria to be used to distribute these students into other universities is not yet known.
Our effort to talk to the likely to be affected students from these medical schools was only successful at Busitema University where a one Peter Abaho a second year student pursuing Bachelor of Science in Anesthesia told Campus Bee that they are still waiting for what the university will officially say about this incident.
“We were affected emotionally when we heard that our medical school will be closed, but the University management requested us to be calm as they are trying to solve the matter. We the continuing students may not be affected but our fellow brothers and sisters who are set to join in August are likely to be the mostly affected although the university assured us that they will make sure the situation does not affect any student, new or continuing,” Abaho narrated to our reporter.
