Over 20 Student leaders from different universities and institutions are said to have crossed to the ruling party National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The student leaders led by renown Makerere University political strategist and mentor Roy Rugumayo were welcomed to the party by NRM secretary general Richard Todwong on Thursday.
Todwong said the leaders have made the best choice because NRM is the only reliable and accommodative political party with a clear vision of transforming the country.
“Joining the NRM by these young vibrant youth is timely. They have made the best choice because the NRM is the only reliable and accommodative political party with a clear vision of transforming the communities,” he said.
He further noted that unlike in the opposition where members are in constant fights, the NRM welcomes everyone willing to offer leadership in the fight against the problems of the population.
“Unlike in the opposition where members are in constant fights without a clear agenda, the NRM under President Museveni welcomes everyone willing to offer leadership in the fight against the problems of the population,” Todwong said.
Roy Rugumayo said ‘we are ready to learn. We are ready to work.’
Notable of these is outgoing MUBS guild president Waswa Christopher who has been a member of the Democratic Party and former Victoria University guild president Jorine Cater who has been a member of the National Unity Platform.
However, the development has faced backlash on social media with most critics alleging that these have been working for the NRM whilst disguising as members of the opposition.
Kabuulwa Muzafaluh, Makerere’s young politician who quickly rose through the ranks after the 88th guild campaigns claims these have recruited themselves.
“So do you think we don’t know where those people have been before. You recruit yourselves and then come here to make news. Who doesn’t know where most of those youths have been,” he says.
