A total of 2,253 students have today graduated with various qualifications during Kampala International University – KIU 22nd graduation ceremony virtually. Among others, the ceremony was graced by the university’s Chancellor, Prof Mahmood Mamdani who was installed recently.
The virtual ceremony, which was officiated by Hans Hofstraat, the Vice President and Innovation Program Manager at Philips Chief Technology Office as the chief guest was the first of its kind since the establishment of KIU 20 years ago.
The university management resolved to hold the graduation scientifically/ virtually following the closure of all universities in March 2020 in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19.
While giving his remarks at the ceremony, the KIU Vice Chancellor Dr. Mouhammad Mpezamihingo disclosed that 38% (871) of the graduands are female while 62% (1,382) are male. According to Mpezamihingo, 43% (976) of the graduands graduated with Science-based awards, 167 post graduates including 4 PHDs and 27 bachelor holders scooped first class degrees while 57% (1,277) are arts, humanities, business and law graduates.
Dr. Mpezamihingo advised the graduands to be good ambassadors of the university by sharing their experience and benefits from KIU to the world.
“Please take care of your precious lives by staying safe and healthy not only against the pandemic, there are others hazards you need to watch.” Mpezamihingo said before adding that “ I wish to say, remain great ambassadors of KIU, we are releasing you into the world today. Go out there, stand out as a KIU ambassador, share your experiences and benefits from the networks you have had.”
The KIU Vice Chancellor also highlighted on the progress of the university despite the closure of the university since March 2020. Mpezamihingo revealed that the university has successfully held top management meetings virtually as well as the installation of their new Chancellor digitally, upscale the functionality of the Learning Management System, among other milestones.
“We were able to upscale the functionality of the Learning Management System, in order to allow continuity of student learning using online resources, and re-tooling the academic and research staff for online delivery, research and innovations.” Mpezamihingo said.
During his address to the congregation, the newly installed Chancellor Prof. Mahmood Mamdani advised the graduands that graduation is not the end of their education journey but rather the end of their respective courses. Mamdani further advised graduands to develop themselves through coming up with innovative ideas.
