Close to 2248 students obtained awards at the 26th Islamic University In Uganda graduation ceremony in Mbale on Saturday.
The graduation ceremony that was held at the main campus was graced by the Vice president of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Edward Ssekandi as the chief guest, the Minister of State for Higher Education, Hon. John Chrysostom Muyingo and His Eminence Sheik Shaban Ramadhn Mubaje (Supreme Mufti).
Among the 2248 students that were awarded at the ceremony, 1095 (49%) were female whereas 1153 (51%) were male. These received Certificate, diploma and Masters degree awards depending on the disciplines that they pursued.
According to performance, 10 percent (225 students) excelled with First Class degrees, 87 percent (1955 students) with Second Class and 3 percent (68 students) with Pass or Gentleman’s degree.
A total of 162 students (52 female and 110 male) received Master’s degrees, 62 (23 female and 39 male) obtained postgraduate diplomas, 115 students (91 male and 24 female) got certificates, 380 students (220 female and 160 male) settled for undergraduate diplomas.
The Prince Badiru Kankungulu Award, a special award given to the overall student, was handed to Abdul Rahman Mahadi, a student of Bachelors in Islam and Arabic language at the main campus.
“Male students performed generally better than their female counterparts. The numbers have also increased this year and we hope for more. These graduands should go on and become ambassadors of the University out there,” said the Academic Registrar, Dr. Halima Wakabi Akbar.
