Campus Bee has received reliable information that the Makerere University management wrote to the Parliamentary Committee on Education requesting for the reschedule of the legislators’ planned visit to Ivory Tower due to the ongoing examinations.
According to Julius kateregga, the Makerere University Guild President, the administration’s excuse to push the visit is vague. Kateregga added that the panicking admin has now embarked on through cleaning of the dirty premises ahead of the committee’s visit scheduled for 5th December.
“The University Management took it upon themselves to write back to the Parliamentary Committee stating that since we are for examinations, the Committee should postpone it’s visit to 5th December, 2019. While we are in for examinations, not the entire students body or it’s leadership can entirely be in the examination room wholly at any one point in time. So, we find that reason vague and a ploy to buy time. Nevertheless, management has within this short time expedited cleaning of university premises in preparation for the Committee.” Kateregga said in a statement.
The MPs were supposed to visit Makerere University on Tuesday, 26th November to find out more details about what led to the 15% tuition increment strike and later report back to parliament. The Parliament of Uganda had also scheduled their vote on the 15% tuition increment at Makerere for Wednesday 27th November but that didn’t happen either. Among other issues, the legislators were also supposed to comment on the sorry state of the university’s halls of residence.
Kateregga, who is optimistic that the committee will work out something good for students’ welfare also revealed that they (students guild) have submitted a document to the state on the justification of their demands. Some of the demands include; scraping off the 15% policy, improved halls of residence, re-instating suspended students among others.
“The students Guild Leadership has submitted a comprehensive document to the State on the justification of our demands to the best that our technical abilities can afford, from the Student perspective. We’ll share this document with the Public in the shortest time possible.” Kateregga’s statement reads further.
