Honourable Proscovia Oromait Alengot is among the 1,000 legislators who will today be awarded Golden Jubilee Medals for serving in the House since independence.
The first teenage Member of Parliament in Uganda’s history is currently in the US concentrating on her studies after she was dismissed from Uganda Christian University. She did not seek a re-election for the 10th August House.
In a communication to the former MPs, the Clerk to Parliament asked former MPs to pick up their awards in person, and that persons picking up awards on behalf of awardees to have a letter of authorization.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, said the awards are being given “in recognition of their service to the nation.”
“Not everyone who served is on the list because some have already received their medals,” said Kadaga asking MPs to inform families of deceased former legislators about the event.
Uganda has had nine parliaments since independence until the 9th Parliament in May 2016.
Born 1st January 1993, the 18 year old at the time did not know that her father’s death had come as a blessing in disguise. Following her Father’s death, she went ahead to contest in the USUK elections and emerged winner, thus becoming the youngest MP in Africa and second youngest in the world.
The toddler who was just a few months above 18 years moved into the August House ready to debate her way and prove that’s she’s not a joke. Congratulations to her!
