The struggle and efforts of students who demonstrated against 15% tuition increment policy has been let down by the Parliamentary Education Committee, we have learned.
In mid October this year, the activities within Makerere University were brought to a stand still by the students demonstrations against the above policy which they referred to as being unfair to Ugandan students from average families.
Yesterday 11th December 2019, the Parliamentary Education committee led by Hon Opolot Jacob presented their findings about Makerere University to the entire parliament.
From their objectives, the law makers concluded that the 15% tuition increment shouldn’t be halted, because that increment policy was already included in the Makerere University budget which the same parliamentary Committee had approved.
By suspending the policy, the institution’s budget execution has to be distorted, MPs reasoned.
MPs also found out that Makerere University is operating beyond it’s capacity which affects the quality of service delivery at the instruction.
Makerere University is supposed to have a number of 2,700 students but currently the popution is 38,000 students!
