As other students around the country were busy planning women’s day celebrations, Nkumba university had two events in three days though the women’s day celebrations overshadowed the other.
The university through its Electoral Commission (EC) prepared a guild presidential candidates’ debate on Friday last week to find out who is more capable of taking on the institution through testing all the candidates’ capabilities in debate.
The guild presidential aspirants included Opira Otaremwa (NRM), Sunday Amagule (Independent), Faruku Mubiru (People Power), Isaac Muhwezi (Independent) and Paddy Lwazi (People Power).
Though it was supposed to be a fight of knowledge, it ended up in a physical fight as People Power supporters battled with the NRM supporters who didn’t agree with certain aspects of the debate.
The battle was mainly between People Power’s Faruku Mubiru and NRM’s Opira Otaremwa and sparked off when the NRM candidate who was the last speaker stepped on stage in cheers from his supporters smartly dressed in yellow clothings and started singing “Tubonga Naawe”, which triggered the anger of the People Power supporters that say they’re tired of the party.
Supporters then started abusing each other’s parties and physical fights ensued where some students ended up attaining minor injuries that they’re still nursing.
The good news is that no candidate got injured in the whole saga and the elections are scheduled to take place on March 14th.
