A photo capturing a Makerere University graduand and an elderly woman believed to be her grandmother, riding their way to graduation ceremony on a boda boda (motorcycle taxi) has melted hearts inside and beyond borders.
The emotional moment was captured by a passerby who was struck by the sight of the young woman dressed in her Makerere graduation gown, seated in front of her grandmother on the back of the motorcycle.
The passerby who reasonated with the graduand suggested that despite the financial constraints, she (graduate) persevered her academic pursuits, ultimately earning her degree from Uganda’s most prestigious institution.
“I am sure she can form an incorruptible labour force. People from humble beginnings are normally honest.” The passerby said.
What made the photo particularly poignant was the presence of the graduate’s grandmother. Clad in traditional attire, the elderly woman sat proudly behind, her face reflecting a mix of pride and joy as they made their way to the graduation venue.
In Uganda, the journey to (and along) higher education is fraught with obstacles. To see the graduand and her grandmother ride their way on boda boda to the graduation ceremony is not just a matter of convenience but also shows determination to overcome adversity.
