Freshers at Makerere University today morning were left stranded after the acting vice-chancellor, Barnabas Nawangwe, defied orders of the Education Minister and First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni of opening the university today.
“The halls of residents are closed, the lecture rooms are closed the non-teaching staff have refused to hand over the keys because we are willing to clean halls and lecture rooms ourselves,” Fred Kazibwe, one of the freshmen told this reporter.
“I am from Bushenyi, I can’t start travelling back home and yet I am here for one purpose, to study,” Sarah Butetsi lamented.
Makerere University acting Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe said the council has not yet agreed on the reopening date for new academic year despite directive by education minister Janet Museveni.
Yesterday, Prof Nawangwe said “University Council is having a meeting today, we shall communicate to public what we have agreed on”.
This comes after Hon. Janet Museveni’s meeting with Makerere University yesterday students who were demonstrating the delayed start of new academic year.
