The future of Bachelor of Dental Surgery students at Makerere University is now as clear as day light following the completion and opening of a dental hospital and school at the main campus.
A report signed earlier by the chairpersons of the East African Community Medical and Dental Practitioners Council had recommended the closure of the university’s dental department at it’s College of Health Science in Mulago.
They cited the dental clinic running without enough staff and the necessary equipment and the school not meeting the minimum requirements to train students as the reason.
The university management however moved in swiftly to open the biggest dental hospital and school in the country. The facility that is located opposite the university guild offices in the eastern side of campus has the latest state of the art operating room and laboratory dental equipment.
Abraham Sisey Karameka and Ivan Butali, fourth year Bachelor of Dental Surgery students say the hospital will go a very long way in training them in orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology and community dentistry.
The hospital has given back to the entire Kampala fraternity as a celebration for its inauguration by organizing a free dental medical camp that has been running from 19th to the 23rd of August.
