As part of Makerere University’s ongoing efforts to improve student living conditions, Lumumba Hall has undergone extensive renovations.
The hall is now set to accommodate female students from Mary Stuart Hall, which is itself undergoing refurbishment.
This temporary relocation is expected to last until the completion of the Mary Stuart Hall renovations, at which point the university will reassess the residential arrangements.
Lumumba Hall, named after Patrice Lumumba, the revered Congolese independence leader, has been a cornerstone of Makerere University’s student life since its establishment.
It has been synonymous with male student activism, unity, and the partnership with female counterparts at Mary Stuart, birthing the “Lumbox solidarity.”
This solidarity was often expressed through collective actions, including spirited participation in university activities, and at times, vocal protests advocating for student rights.
Lumumba’s mascot, “Gongom,” symbolized this spirited solidarity, rallying students together through both challenging and celebratory times.
With the arrival of female students, the legacy of “Lumbox solidarity” faces a unique evolution since the iconic Gongom mascot has been retired.
