MUK, what’s on ground.
The Makerere university environs are no place for the faint hearted. The security detail within the boundaries of Makerere university would give Kony a run for his money.
Police deployed heavily around all entrances, and all major halls of residence ; University Hall, Nsibirwa, Lumumba and Mitchell where acts of lawlessness were reported last night. Tyres set ablaze and chants sang. Live bullets have continued to riddle the academic airs, gates at the aforementioned halls of residence have been barricaded to hold back students within the hall enclosures.
A stand off between the guild president, Bala and police at University hall goes a long way to project the intensity of the situation. Bala has been debarred from addressing the seething students.
A gigantic police anti riot armoured vehicle is making rounds around Makerere, with wailing sirens in bid to banish the small bands of disorganised students who managed to access the university roads.
Tear-gas has been fired to disperse the angry students. The students demand total withdrawal of the 100% fees policy by the university council.
Students are bent at all forms of expressing agitation including civil disobedience.
Makerere post Police Chief Mucunguzi held a crisis meeting with the guild president, procedds from the meeting haven’t been made public.
Students have been reduced to chanting from the safety of their rooms. However at Lumumba and Mitchell halls. Tempers are flaring.
Will police hold its ground, for now police seems to have the situation fully under control, question is for how long can they hold?
