The University of Kisubi (UniK), a private co-educational institution located on the Kampala-Entebbe road, held its 9th graduation ceremony on Friday, October 4, 2024. The ceremony, held at the university sports grounds, marked a momentous occasion for the 289 students who completed their respective academic programs. Under the inspiring theme, “You are the light of the world,” the event underscored the university’s commitment to academic excellence, community service, and leadership development.
The university awarded degrees and diplomas to students from various disciplines, with a notable gender representation: 171 female graduates (59%) and 118 male graduates (41%). Among these, 45 students earned their Master’s degrees, 7 received Post-Graduate Diplomas, 135 were awarded Bachelor’s degrees, 95 earned Diplomas, and 7 students received Certificates.
The graduating class was lauded for their commitment, dedication, and resilience throughout their academic journeys. In recognition of their exceptional performance, five students were honored for achieving the highest grades in their respective faculties:
- Baingana Tinka Aventious (CGPA 4.50) – Best Distinction Student, Faculty of Education
- Nakyanzi Agngella (CGPA 4.51) – Best First-Class Student, Faculty of Health Sciences
- Abong Ronald (CGPA 4.55) – Best First-Class Student, Faculty of Social Sciences and Psychology
- Oloya Brian (CGPA 4.71) – Best First-Class Student, Faculty of Business and Information Technology
- Ikulot Juliet (CGPA 4.65) – Best First-Class Student, Faculty of Education
The ceremony was presided over by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Bro. Mugema Deogratias, who praised the graduates for their hard work and determination. He also urged the Ugandan government to continue supporting the university’s mission of providing quality education. Dr. Mugema’s address celebrated the institution’s success in producing graduates who are well-equipped to contribute to the nation’s development and global competitiveness.
Among the distinguished guests in attendance were Uganda’s Vice President, Jessica Alupo, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and the State Minister for Higher Education, John Muyingo. In a speech delivered by Vice President Alupo on behalf of President Museveni, the president congratulated the graduates and their families for their accomplishments. He acknowledged the university’s significant progress since he first officiated a UniK graduation ceremony in 2010, noting its outstanding performance in the 14th Higher Education Exhibition, where it ranked second in the public and chartered university category.
The president also highlighted UniK’s contribution to research and innovation, praising the institution for its integrity and effective use of allocated resources. He emphasized that the university’s ongoing research initiatives have the potential to advance Uganda’s development agenda, particularly in facilitating the country’s transition into a knowledge-based economy.
In his closing remarks, President Museveni pledged the government’s continued support for the University of Kisubi, particularly through the Ministry of Science and Technology. He highlighted the importance of fostering innovation and converting research into marketable products that could benefit both the university and the nation at large.
The graduation ceremony was not only a celebration of individual and collective achievement but also a call to action for graduates to embrace their role as change-makers in society. As the theme “You are the light of the world” suggested, the graduates were encouraged to shine brightly in their respective fields, making meaningful contributions to their communities and the nation.
