In day one of Makerere University 68th graduation ceremony that kicked off today at the University’s freedom square, a number of students walked away with PHDs, Masters, Bachelors Degrees and Diplomas from three colleges. These fresh graduands came from the College of Natural Sciences, the College of Agricultural and Environmental sciences as well as the college of Education and External studies.
While giving his speech at today’s graduation ceremony, the Makerere University Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe congratulated the graduands as well as their parents/sponsors. Prof Nawangwe also went ahead to inform the fresh graduands that they have been trained as critical thinkers, not mere job seekers, “You are going out to the world which expects a lot from you. We have trained you to be critical thinkers and not mere job seekers. Go out and create jobs the country is yearning for,” Nawangwe noted.
Having graduated from one of the best Universities in Uganda, Prof Nawangwe told the graduands to struggle and find their position in society, keep their pride by staying away from corruption, “Avoid vain ambitions and keep away from corruption. Love and respect your parents and God will open doors for you,” Prof Nawangwe advised.
The ceremony was presided over by Prof Ezra Suruma who kicked off by graduating PHD graduands followed by Masters and Diplomas. Around 14,085 are expected to graduate in the four-day graduation ceremony with 71 graduands walking away with PHDs.
