About a month ago, Kyambogo University students started a ‘1K shillings campaign’ in a move to save the starving dwellers of Karamoja region that were dying in big numbers due to hunger.
“Students Together to Save the Starving People of Karamoja” was the theme of this campaign.
These students led by a one Kizito Julius always moved from one lecture room to another and from hostel to hostel collecting relief items and money (the least amount being one thousand shillings).
Sacks and bags were put in different places around campus such that the students would put the little they had out of their generosity.
Sugar, beans and clothes were some of the items the seven students leading this campaign were able to get from fellow students.
These students were later joined by two students from Makerere University to fight for the same cause, which yielded fruit on 27th August 2022.
The money collected under the campaign was used to buy numerous sacks of cassava flour, maize flour, more beans and sugar that they took to Karamoja and distributed in three parishes.
It is alleged that the more they delayed to visit the Karimajong and give the relief, the higher the death toll.
Hundreds of Karimajongs have died due to hunger according to recent statistics.
Driven by this fear, these students took immediate action by taking the little they had managed to collect in the one month. However, they plan to collect so much more and visit Karamoja a second time.
Kizito Julius and his comrades thank everyone who generously contributed to this noble cause and still encourages people to give more for a hand that gives is the hand that receives.
