In the wake of today morning at around 4am, there was a fire outbreak in Mary Stuart, an all girls hall of residence at Makerere University after what has been said to be poor electricity connections from the canteen area on the ground level.
As result, property in the first two blocks of the hall tower (Block G and H) has been totally destroyed and a few resident students acquired burns but no loss of life has been registered at the moment.
Several students on Block G and H got serious wounds but by press time, the Police first aid team had swung in action and was taking care of their wounds.
There was however also a case of a yet to be identified girl who in the panic of the situation, decided to jump from the building and she sustained just injuries from that – lucky for her.
Unconfirmed reports claim she jumped from Block G, the very first floor of the Mary Stuart tower and she only attained face injuries. She had just moved in from Africa hall since all girls are staying in Mary Stuart for the recess period.
The aftermath of the fire was a total disaster and property of the girls in the affected blocks was completely burned.
This includes usable day-to-day materials like beddings and clothes on top of any other appliances that the students may have been in possession of.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) leaders, notably the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Makerere University Lord Councillor Doreen Nyanjura were among the first notable people to arrive at the fire scene and stand in solidarity with the affected girls.
The dean of students of Makerere, Cyriaco Kabagambe and the Makerere Police Officer in Charge (O.C) Kasibante were also at the scene as early as 6am.
While addressing the press, Mr. Kabagambe said that as management, they will sit to find a way forward after the calamity but assured everyone that the girls would be relocated.
For the recess period of study where students from selected courses stay at Campus for holiday studies, all girls had been allocated Mary Stuart to stay in whereas the boys are staying in Nkrumah and Nsibirwa halls.
