Thursday, 10th February, 2022, the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) celebrated its 34th anniversary at its main campus in Mbale city Under the theme ” Re-Imagining and Re-thinking the Role of Alumni Association in Transformation of the University.”
The celebration brought together some notable alumni of the university namely His Excellency Dr Galiwango Hassan who is the High Commissioner of Uganda to Kenya, Dr Jamil Serwanga who is Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) of IUIU , Dr Halima Wakabi Akbar who is the first female Academic Registrar of IUIU, Dr Mayimuna Nimulora who is the Director of Research, Publications and Innovations of IUIU and Dr Abdulnoor Ssekindi who works at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) among others. Mr .Ssekindi is also the chairman of IUIU Alumni Association.
Addressing the students, Dr Galiwango said he is grateful to get his studies at the Islamic University in Uganda. The High Commissioner said IUIU prepares its students for the future.
“IUIU graduates complete students who are ready to compete with others in the job market and entrepreneurial ventures. This University combines high quality education and good character to allow students achieve their dreams in life since education without good character is destructive,” Dr Galiwango who was at IUIU from 1990 to 1993 said.
The High Commissioner said that he is where he is today because of the Islamic University in Uganda and challenged the students to follow suit.
“IUIU has produced Prime Ministers, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Higher Commissioners, Members of Parliament and I need to see the president from you. You can achieve that because of good education that this University offers,” he said.
In his remarks, IUIU Rector Professor Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda commits to devote his time and expertise for the continued growth of the university. Professor Gyagenda who was the warden of the university in 1988 requested the alumni to work hand in hand with the university to maintain the legacy of the Islamic University in Uganda.
Among other activities marking the 34th anniversary, the rector the alumni, students and all participants cleaned up the university premises. The alumni also played football and netball games. The Rector Professor Gyagenda was featured in the football game.
The Islamic University in Uganda was established on 10th February, 1988 by the second largest Inter-governmental organisation in the world, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in collaboration with Government of Uganda (GoU) to provide quality education to the English speaking countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. In 1990, the Parliament of Uganda passed the Islamic University in Uganda Act formally establishing the university in the country.
