Makerere University fraternity was this Friday morning at the Freedom Square thanking God for the far he has brought the oldest University in East Africa.
In a prayer led by Bishop Joshua Lwere, the National Overseer Association of Pentecostals and Evangelicals, Makerere University has asked for more success in the coming 100 years.
The prayer was conducted under the theme; “Ebenezer, Thus far the Lord has brought us.”
Most. Rev. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, the Archbishop Church of Uganda and the guest preacher of the event also thanked God for the centenary celebrations that Makerere is holding this year in October,
“Behind all the success there has been Makerere, is a great and marvelous God. The God of Makerere is a long serving God, patient God, a kind God whom we are here to exalt and magnify today,” the Archbishop noted.
In his prayer, Rev. Kaziimba Mugalu asked God to help Makerere continue to be relevant in this dynamic and changing world, “I pray it continues to stand amidst the challenges of individualism, consumerism, and materialism which are coming from outside.”
He however said it’s so unfortunate that the 100 years of success and excellence have come at a time when the main building was burnt.
“It is very unfortunate that we are celebrating this University when the iconic building was burnt and it’s no longer in existence.”
With continued support that stakeholders keep rendering to Makerere, it’s a vivid evidence the institution is prospering.
“I did not study from here but I have three students who graduated from Makerere University. I am therefore an indirect beneficiary of Makerere University,” Rev. Kaziimba argued.
On that note, he extended his prayers to the best public University in Uganda to continue transforming in the next 100 years of its future.
Amongst the co-celebrants included Ap. Dr. Julius Peter Oyet, who prayed for Makerere University to restore its academic position in Africa and keep moving in 100 years to come.

In the same vein, Prof Henry Alinaitwe, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance noted that Makerere is the representation of the whole nation and thus said it was worthy a celebration for the milestone reached.
“Many achievements have been reached but we also got challenges like the burning of the main building which is now under construction. We therefore thank God that we fell down but now we are back on our feet,” Prof. Alinaitwe said.
Among the achievements, Prof. Alinaitwe highlighted the perimeter wall that is still under construction and the funding received towards research, halls of residence and the Ivory Tower.
Mrs. Lorna Magara, the Chairperson of the University Council in her remarks thanked God that Makerere University is becoming relevant due to the transformations registered.
“We really acknowledge God for enabling Makerere reach this far, we are rebuilding structures to become relevant to our community. Therefore, our gathering is memorial.”
