In an effort to equip young architects and designers with the necessary skills of design and colour, Paint company Kansai Plascon last Friday carried out a training for Makerere University Architecture and design students.
Kansai Plascon Africa Limited, a subsidiary of Japan based Kansai Paint Co, recently acquired Sadolin Paints operations in Uganda and other East African countries. Kansai Paint is a global company with major operations in Japan, China, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Its product offering covers the decorative, industrial, protective coatings and automotive segment.
The training that was done by Claire Bond, a seasoned color decorative artist and décor stylist armed the students with the necessary skills on interpreting colors, and knowing which color is appropriate for different surfaces.
Ms. Bond noted that some Ugandans are making mistakes with color because they do not know the deeper meaning of different colors and therefore cannot choose them suitably.
She advised that when choosing color, a number of factors should be considered. She advised that for interior colors, one should take into account the design, function of the room, the amount and kind of light (natural and artificial) present and the ambiance one is seeking. For exterior color, she noted that elements like region, climate, architectural style, building materials should factor into the decision as well.
Commenting on why they chose to train students, Tyron Immelmann the Marketing Manager Kansai Plascon said the students are the future of color and design therefore it is important to pass on skills to the young minds before they go out to the field.
