Police dispersed a group of pre-medical interns from Makerere University Medical School who were planning to protest against the Ministry of Health’s failure to deploy them for internships.
The interns, who had gathered to voice their frustration, are part of the 2024 cohort, with none of the 125 qualified students having been deployed to various medical centers.
The protest was prompted by the Ministry of Health’s recent announcement that 2,500 medical students would be deployed for internships. However, when the final list was released, only about 1,200 students were selected nationally, leaving many qualified students, including the entire Makerere University cohort, without placements.
Prof. Annet Nakimuli, Dean of the School of Medicine at Makerere University, expressed concern over the situation, stating that the university’s management is actively engaging with relevant authorities to resolve the issue.
“We are holding meetings to ensure that our students are deployed and can continue their medical training,” Nakimuli said, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The lack of deployment has left these students in a precarious position, unable to advance in their medical careers.
