Early morning today at about 5am, Mary Stuart girls were in all Makerere University WhatsApp groups raising alarm about the fire outbreak in their hall of residence and calling upon everyone to contact the Police Fire Brigade before the fire spreads out of control.
Luckily, the calls were successful and the Fire Brigade and Rescue Services of the Uganda Police wasted no time to arrive and try to save the situation.
A total of 7 fire fighting trucks were dispatched to the site and the massive fire which had started in the canteen on ground floor was beginning to spread to the other floors but was successfully contained. The only visible damage was on the ground floor, Block G and H, the very first ones on the Mary Stuart hall tower.
As of press time, the trucks had been retreated after saving the hall of residence from further damage.
According to Police Spokesperson, SSP Emilian Kayima, only three female students were injured as they were escaping and they are not in bad state.
Police also confirms that their investigation teams and Scenes of Crimes Officers are on ground to do investigations on the actual cause of the fire and probably rate the damage extent. SSP Kayima commended the students and citizens who called the police quickly enabling them to quickly respond.
He also, on behalf of the Police, wished the injured students a quick recovery and assured parents to calm down as there is no more cause for alarm.
