Police have released Makerere University fourth year medical student, Jeremiah Mukyemu who was arrested after a girl fell off Mitchell Hall’s third floor on the Easter weekend.
Brenda Nakyejju jumped off Mukyemu’s room injuring her limbs and jaws after Mukyemu allegedly tried to rape her.
Now, Police says they can not hold Mukyemu any longer because of lack of sufficient evidence. Police says they held the victim beyond 48 hours as required by law but there is no evidence pinning the suspect.
“Since Mitchel Hall is a male students’ hall of residence, we want to establish what she was doing there in the night,” said Kampala Metropolitan spokesman Emilian Kayima adding that Mukyemu told police Nakyejju was actually his girlfriend, and the two had a cordial relationship. “We held the suspect beyond the 48 hours detention period because we had not yet got the victim’s side of the story, seeing as she was unconscious,” he said.
Nakyejju speaks out
“Jeremiah is not my boyfriend, he is just my friend, actually I had just known him for about a month,” Nakyejju said in an interview with Saturday Monitor.
“It was at around 5pm, I was planning to go home for Easter. Jeremiah called me asking me to visit him, I told him I would be going home, so I would only spend about 15 minutes at his place, which he agreed.
It was at around 5.30pm when I told him I was leaving. He locked me in the room and left, saying he would be back shortly, but he came back after an hour.
I think it was at around 9pm, I screamed asking for help because he wanted to rape me. He took my phone and switched it off and after locked the room and left
They told me he [Mukyemu] was arrested from here, I was unconscious at that time, I was even surprised he came around… what had he come to do… that monster?” she narrated.
