Prof. Jude T. Lubega has today, Friday 25th February been installed as the 5th Vice-Chancellor of Nkumba University in a colorful ceremony. Prof. Lubega, who succeeds Prof. Wilson Muyinda Mande is a Professor of Information Technology who has vast experience in ICT4D.
The newly installed VC previously served as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nkumba University from January 2020, and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Uganda Technology and Management University from 2013 – 2019.
Among other responsibilities, Prof. Lubega also served as Makerere University Deputy Dean and the Head of the Information Technology Department in the College of Computing and Information Sciences from 2007 to 2012.
While speaking at his installation ceremony, Prof. Lubega lauded the Nkumba University Management for trusting him to become the next Vice-Chancellor. He further paid tribute to the past Vice-Chancellors and their teams for the contributions they made to the betterment of the university.
“Your appointment signals a humble gesture and the great hope that you have in me in being the head of this University. We will work together with this community to make Nkumba University as it’s envisioned in our Mission and vision.” Prof Lubega said.
He also vowed to restore Nkumba University’s past glory during his four-year term of service as Vice-chancellor. Among other things, Prof. Lubega has promised that his team will teach stakeholders on how to adapt to the emerging trends within the world in a bid to survive in this dynamic environment.
“Under my leadership for the period 2022-2026, my efforts will be put towards the restoration of Nkumba University’s past glory. Great focus will be put on developing everlasting systems and structures, nurturing an innovative teaching, learning and research environment, developing a multi collaborative approach between NU and other organisations, growing students’ numbers / enrollments, a well-governed university; a university with self-motivated and innovative staff, a university that is ICT abled through all business processes and university that is financially sustainable through multiple resource mobilization avenues.” He said.
Prof. Lubega holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from The University of Reading (UK), a Master of Science in Network Centered Computing from The University of Reading (UK), a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Statistics (Uganda Martyrs University) and a Certificate in Human Resource and Management.
He is the Chief Executive Officer for 8Tech Consults one of the leading ICT consulting companies in Uganda since 2007. He was listed among the 100 Movers and Shakers in Corporate Online Learning for 2018 in Africa.
Meanwhile, as Nkumba University prepares to hold its 24th graduation ceremony scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 26th February, the university has unveiled the Chancellors Innovation initiative. The initiative is being developed to spur innovation for purposes of bringing together multiple stakeholders interested in nurturing innovation and creating employment.
It is also aimed at contributing to the reduction of the net import of products and services, especially where the competence exists. The Chancellor’s innovation initiative is the first step to light fires within the education sector positioning Nkumba University as a pioneer that it is and in search for bold ideas.
