Prof. Yunus Daud Mgaya has been Installed as the chancellor of Kampala International University (KIU) at a ceremony held at KIU main campus on June 14th.
Prof. Mgaya becomes the fourth chancellor of Kampala International University since its inception in 2001, taking over from Prof. Mahmood Mamdani who had held the position since July 2020.
The installation was presided over by Al Hajj Dr. Hassan BassajjaBalaba who serves as the chairperson board of trustees.
Upon taking oath as chancellor, Prof. Mgaya vowed to champion innovations in science and technology and urged all stakeholders to work hard in order to achieve the institution’s goals.
“As your Chancellor, I will make sure that the University keeps pace with the latest innovations in science and technology and to nurture young scientists who will make Africa proud,” he said.

Dr. Yunus Daud Mgaya is a Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Dar es Salaam. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Marine Biology from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1986. In 1989 he obtained a Masters in Fisheries Biology and Management from the University of British Columbia in Canada. In 1991 he joined the National University of Ireland-Galway and obtained his Ph.D. in Marine Aquaculture in 1995.
Mgaya has previously served as Dean faculty of Aquatic Sciences and technology and Deputy vice chancellor planning, finance and administration at university of Dar es salaam. He has also served as executive secretary of the Tanzania commission for universities and director general National Institute for Medical Research.
Past chancellors
Prof. George Kanyeihamba was KIU’s first chancellor succeeded by Prof. John Pancreas Mukasa Ssebuwufu. Mukasa handed over to Prof. Mahmood Mamdani who has been succeeded by Prof. Yunus Daud Mgaya.
