The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabus Nawangwe has ordered over 45 Lecturers that were sacked by the institution on 22nd December, 2018 to refund salaries that they earned during the period when they were away from work.
Prof. Nawangwe issued this order during a Media brief at Makerere University held last week. He emphasized that this money was received after no work had been done since the lecturers had absconded from duty, failed to complete studies, and committed financial fraud and insubordination.
He confirmed that the University will officially write to the staff that had been away from work but were continually receiving salary from the University. He also threatened to use legal means by suing the personalities who had received the money so as to recover it.
“All those staff that we continued paying our money and yet had left the University should refund it. We cannot tolerate staff working elsewhere and earning from us without any service rendered,” Said Prof. Nawangwe.
Prof. Nawangwe also defended the decision to sack the Academic staff members. He said that the appointments board acted within the confines of the law and that all the affected staff was given the opportunity for a fair hearing. He said that the aggrieved staff can appeal to the staff tribunal.
Some sacked staff have petitioned parliament citing irregularities in the process. This has attracted criticism from Prof. Nawangwe who has castigated the staff for skipping the staff tribunal. He however indicated that the University is ready to defend their position if invited to Parliament.
