Makerere University’s vice-chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, has released the proposed new semester dates following the extension of the lockdown for more 21 days by President Museveni to curb down on the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
These proposed dates are on an assumption that semester two resumes on 9th May, 2020. According to Nawangwe, the semester which started on January 18, 2020, is hoped to end on June 27, 2020.
“Semester shorter by one week, teaching will continue for four weeks and examinations will take three weeks,” reads an excerpt.
In the same vein, Nawangwe proposed that the recess term begins on June 27 till August 8, 2020.
“Shortened by four weeks. Incomplete activities may continue during a holiday week and freshers’ orientation week,” he said.
The 2020/2021 freshers’ orientation is hoped to take one week starting from August 15, 2020, to August 21, 2020. Relatedly, it is proposed that the Academic Year 2020/2021 semester one begins on August 22, 2020, to December 19, 2020, taking 17 weeks.
The statement also indicates that semester two 2020/2021 begins on January 23, 2021 to May 22, 2021. However, according to the University’s Communications and International Relations Officer, Makerere University has not released the final dates of the resumption of university business. The final dates shall be released after the presidential guide on COVID-19.
