The Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe has finally broken the silence following a vote of no confidence petition against the university council, that was signed and addressed to the Minister of Education and Sports for approval.
In a letter addressed to Dr Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi (MUASA Chairperson), Prof Nawangwe reveals that the petition was made by only 15 members out of the 2500 staff members. Nawangwe goes ahead to advise the MUASA Chairperson and General Secretary to withdraw the petition as well as telling the Minister of Education, Hon Janet Museveni to ignore it.
“The recommendation by MUASA for the dissolution of Council, according to your letter derived from the report of the visitation committee to Makerere University submitted to H.E the President and visitor of Makerere University. I find the letter by MUASA to the honourable minister to be extremely arrogant, disrespectful and provocative.” Nawangwe angrily reacts in this letter.
“I, therefore, believe that your petition, which was widely circulated in the mass media, was intended to discredit the current council and deny her of recognition for her tremendous contribution to the University and I would advise the Honorable Minister to dismiss it with the contempt it deserves. I also advise you to withdraw your illegal petition and apologize to the council members for the damage caused to their respectful reputations by the falsehoods in your petition. “ Nawangwe adds.
The petition was signed last week by Dr Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi (MUASA Chairperson), as well as the assembly’s General Secretary Dr Michael Walimbwa who highlighted on the council’s incompetence.
