While presenting their plans for Makerere University today, three aspiring Vice chancellors (Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, Prof Edward Kirumira and Prof Venasius Baryamureeba) appeared before the search committee and students in a public presentation debate. The current deputy VC Prof Nawangwe who is also competing for the VC job made a presentation that addressed most issues Makerere students have been crying over for a long time.
As a professor who worked under six VCs since 1987, Nawangwe has vowed to end sexual harassment at Makerere University as he noted that whoever suspected doing such crimes will argue after being kicked out of the University.
In a question session, Nawangwe was asked how he intends to handle incompetent staff members by one of the University’s staff fellow. In his response, Nawangwe replied that “we are a public institution and we should abide by the law. It is not easy to wake up and tell a person to go just like that,” Nawangwe revealed. However, his response was not well received by students as the majority expected him to recycle incompetent officials.
On his academic reforms, Nawangwe also vows to deal with those who caught tempering with University academic results, “anybody planning to temper with our academic results, count your days. It has not been my job to sort out transcripts but trust me when I am in control,” Nawangwe warned.
To cut his long presentation short, Nawangwe tackled more on strengthening the University’s research capability and constructing modern day infrastructures on the University’s idle land. The aspiring VC also noted that a five star hotel will be established at Makerere idle land in Kololo as well as a high class hospital at Makerere University, “Makerere is one of the best Universities in the world but it is the only one without a hospital” he complained.
