Makerere University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, is making headlines—not for academic achievements but for his A-Level results that recently surfaced online. The results, showing his 1975 performance at Busoga College Mwiri, have sparked debate, criticism, and even mockery.
The documents reveal that Prof. Nawangwe earned two principal passes in Mathematics (C) and Physics (C), a subsidiary pass in General Paper (1), and another subsidiary pass in Chemistry (O). Notably, his Chemistry grades suggest significant struggle, with reports indicating an F9 in practicals.
Despite these results, Nawangwe managed to gain admission to Makerere University for a Civil Engineering degree. However, social media users are questioning whether his academic performance aligns with the standards expected of a Vice-Chancellor at the self-proclaimed “Harvard of Africa.”
In response to the uproar, the professor explained:
“I sat for the East African Advanced Certificate of Education at Busoga College Mwiri in November/December 1975 and despite having been self-tutored for various reasons, I still got two principal passes in mathematics and physics and was admitted to Makerere University for a degree in civil engineering.”

This justification, however, did little to calm the storm online.
Social Media Reactions: The Roasting Begins
🔹 DUKE OF ISHAKA👑 (@Nassif_01_) – “Chemistry almost took your life.”
🔹 duchess🪬 (@duchace) – “Nah these grades are objectively bad. For a VC, a leader in academics lol. You had an F9 in chemistry practicals. Astaghfirullah.”
🔹 tomi suits 🇺🇬🇺🇬 (@tomi_anyine) – “Now we could gauge from your performance in leadership. These results make a lot of sense.”
🔹 Xavier’s son✍️ (@Savage_R3plyz) – “It’s unfortunate that these kinds of people are the ones we are trusting ourselves and our children with. Failed miserably 😒😒😒.”
🔹 Ratif Ssemujju (@RatifSsemujju) – “I did the same combination as the VC of Makerere and I did better in all the subjects. Isn’t that position supposed to be mine? 😃”
🔹 I Will Get Back To You (@robertk24) – “Ekikuru n’amagara 🤷🏿♂️.”
🔹 @antonyagaba – “Sir, does the university you lead enroll students with such points as you got?”
While many are laughing at Prof. Nawangwe’s performance, others are questioning the credibility of Uganda’s education system and its leadership. Should past academic performance define a leader’s ability to run an institution? Or does experience and vision matter more?
For now, the internet continues its roast session, and Prof. Nawangwe is left to watch the fire burn.
