As Ugandans continue to flock pharmacies to buy covidex, a herbal remedy which was approved by the National Drug Authority to aid in the treatment of covid-19, issues over its ownership continue to rise day by day.
It should be remembered that last week, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) where Prof Patrick Ogwang the inventor of covidex heads the department of pharmacy pushed for the ownership of the newly invented remedy.
Through his lawyers of Omongole & CO. Advocates, Prof Ogwang Engeu has warned MUST to stop claiming the ownership and the use of Jena products to solicit money from the Government without their client’s approval.
It is said that the partnership between MUST and the Ministry of Science and Technology is based on Jena herbals (U) Ltd’s products yet their client was neither involved nor informed.
‘’We deem this as illegal and fraudulent action by the university and urge the university not to go ahead with said action without the authorization of our client or Prof Ogwang personally,’’ His lawyers advised.
According to the lawyers, incase MUST continues with the said actions they will demand UGX 100 billion for unlawful use of their products. ‘
’Should the University deem it fit to continue with the said illegal acts, they should be ready to be held liable for infringement of the trademarks, patents and all associated intellectual property rights for which Jena herbals (U) Ltd will not hesitate to demand for UGX 100,000,000,000 for unlawful use of their products,’’ they warned.
