The Public Accounts Examinations Board (PAEB) of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda has finally released results for the October 2021 examination results in a virtual ceremony that was graced by journalists and other stakeholders on Wednesday, 27th October 2021.
The exams were earlier scheduled to be held in June but due to the outbreak of COVID-19, they were postponed to October. Following the outbreak of the deadly virus, the Board decided to conduct four examinations diet this year.
While speaking at the ceremony, the PAEB Chairperson CPA Geofrey Byamugisha revealed that 5,640 students had registered to sit for examinations in June 2021 but the number later reduced to 5,151.
“Whereas 5,640 students had registered to sit for examinations in June 2021, the number had reduced to 5,151 by the time we conducted the examinations in October 2021, representing a withdrawal of 489 students (or 8.7%). Even then, the total absentee candidates for the various papers were significantly high.” Byamugisha said.
According to statistics released by the PAEB, the examinations were conducted for a period of 5 days, from 4 – 8 October 2021, at 7 examinations centres; in Arua, Fort Portal, Gulu, Kampala, Mbale, Mbarara, Mbale and Nkozi.
The statistics further indicate that 4,238 candidates attempted the October 2021 examinations compared to 4,453 in December 2020 and 6,516 in November 2019, representing a drop of approximately 35% from the pre-COVID-19 diet of November 2019.

A total of 140 candidates sat for the Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD) Examinations in October this year compared to 151 in December 2020 and 225 in November 2019. In this category, the average pass rate is 60% and out of the 219 candidates who passed their papers, 105 (49.9%) are female and 114 (52.1%) are male. Additionally, 135 (61.6%) candidates passed on first attempt.
Meanwhile, 72 candidates sat for the Certified Tax Advisor (CTA) examinations in October 2021 compared to 58 in December 2020 and 110 in November 2019. The pass rate of 54.6% is significantly higher compared to 41.2% in December 2020 and 45.7% in November 2019.
A total of 4,026 candidates sat for the Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (CPA) examinations in October 2021 compared to 4,244 in December 2020 and 6,181 in November 2019. The average pass rate improved from 31.2% in November 2019 and 32.2% in December 2020 to 36.4% in October 2021. However, the Board noted that there was poor performance in core subjects.
Byamugisha further advised students wishing to sit for examinations in December 2021 to intensify their preparations so as to meet the examinations standard required by PAEB/ICPAU.
Also present at the event was ICPAU President Othieno Mayende who congratulated the candidates before wishing them good luck on their next journey. Othieno also thanked the Ministry of Education and Sports for allowing them to conduct exams safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
