Swedish Royal Government has given USD 32 million (more than Shs 255billion) to five public universities to support scientific research in various disciplines.
The public universities to benefit are Busitema, Kyambogo, Makerere, Gulu and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).
While speaking at the annual review meeting for Sweden International Development Agency (SIDA) at Makerere University today morning, the new Swedish ambassador to Uganda, Per Lindgarde, said the money also caters for scholarships that were given to 337 lecturers in these universities to further their education at Masters, doctorate and post-doctorate levels.
Mukadasi Buyinza, the director Directorate of Research and Undergraduate studies at Makerere said this money will be used for a period of five years.
“We are to build laboratories, fund research in health, business, education, ICT and most of the other disciplines,” Buyinza said.
Ambassador Lindgarde said the money comes at the heels of a “collaboration that was created between Makerere and the government of Sweden, some 15 years back”.
Among the scholarships given, 125 lecturers will go for PhD, 147 for masters while 65 will do post-doctorate studies. Amongst these only 25 will study from Sweden while the rest will do their study from Makerere University.
