At long last, non-teaching staff of public universities have, through their umbrella body PUNTSEF, unanimously agreed to call off their month-long strike protesting against low salaries.
PUNTSEF’s decision follows a marathon meeting held on Thursday from 6pm to 1am between its representatives and the Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kaihura.
A source tells Campusbee that it was during that meeting that a consesus was reached to defer the strike for one month.
Sitting late Friday at the School of Languages, Literature and Communication in the presence of Blaise Akampulira, the head of the crime preventers’ unit and personal assistant to Gen. Kaihura, PUNTSEF communicated the much-anticipated decision to take up their tools of work again.
This, after assurances that their grievances are to be addressed in a month’s time by the Government.
To that end, a meeting is expected with President Museveni next week to address PUNTSEF’s concerns.
In a facebook post, the students’ guild’s information minister Davidson Ndyabahika has urged freshmen to report tomorrow Saturday and continuing students to report on Monday next week as earlier communicated.
On his part, Makerere’s Guild President Bala David has promised to solve issues of freshmen who have not yet received their provisional admission letters within three days.
