Lecturers from public universities across the country have warned that they will not avail their services come the 2018/2019 academic year commencement date in August if the government continues to turn a deaf ear to their out cries.
The lecturers who join themselves under an umbrella association dubbed, Forum for Academic Staff of Public Universities in Uganda chaired by Dr. Grace Lubega noted that they are demanding government to fully implement President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s pledge of raising their annual budget to 108 billion shillings in salaries a move that was intended to raise professors’ salaries to 15 million shillings from the now 8 million starting with the next academic year.
The pledge also involved increasing the teaching assistants pay to about 4 million shillings monthly and according Dr Grace Lubega, the universities will not open if this pledge does not come into reality by July this year.
” We are expecting a very handsome pay slip of a professor indicating 15 or 14 million and if not, we shall be home. Universities, parents and the government are warned that in August the universities will not open.” – He told local media
He says the government has for long promised them an increase in salary and this needs to be resolved in the next financial year
