What was meant to be a joyful day of union at All Saints Cathedral has been overshadowed by tragedy. Rajiv Ruparelia, a prominent businessman and one of the groomsmen at the wedding of Jonathan Bahizi Buteera and Liz Mutoni, died in a fatal motor accident just hours before the ceremony.
Rajiv had just returned from London to stand by his longtime friend Jonathan. According to the official wedding program, seen by this reporter, Rajiv was listed among the groom’s close circle, alongside Kawanguzi Peter Tevin, Banza Birondwa, and others.
The ceremony, scheduled for Saturday morning at All Saints Cathedral, was thrown into disarray as news of Rajiv’s death reached the bridal entourage. Sources close to the family revealed that he had arrived in Uganda earlier in the week and was “deeply excited” to be part of the celebration.

“This was more than a wedding for him—it was a reunion of tight-knit friends,” a source familiar with the arrangements said.
Attendees arrived to find a subdued atmosphere. While the ceremony proceeded in a muted tone, the mood was described as “heavy with grief.” The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, who officiated the wedding, led a brief moment of silence in Rajiv’s memory before the vows.
Rajiv, 35, was not just a business figure—he was a family man, a friend, and a vibrant personality in both corporate and social circles. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s elite, leaving many stunned at the fragility of life.
No official statement has been released yet from the Ruparelia family, but close relatives are expected to speak in the coming days. More information on funeral arrangements and a formal tribute is expected to follow.
