The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Uganda has donated books to help law students at the Makerere University.
According to ICRC, the books will help the law students understand the International Humanitarian Law.
“The ICRC Kampala Regional Delegation has donated various publications to Makerere Law to facilitate teaching of International Humanitarian Law (IHL),” says ICRC in a Tweet that Campus Bee has seen.
The international body says universities play a pivotal role in disseminating IHL.
“Universities are key actors in fulfilling Uganda’s obligation to disseminate IHL set forth in the Geneva Conventions,” says ICRC Uganda.
Makerere University Law students have been attending the annual International Humanitarian Law debates organized by ICRC Uganda.
International humanitarian law is a set of rules that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict. It lays out the responsibilities of states and non-state armed groups during an armed conflict.
IHL is based on the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention on protecting civilians in conflict and the 1977 and 2005 Additional Protocols. The principles that guide and safeguard humanitarian action in armed conflicts are also based on IHL.
