Over 20 students who gave up on their prostitution ‘jobs’ graduated last weekend with vocational skills. This group freshly graduated from Kawempe division at an institute called Kawempe Orphans and Women Development skills training center which equipped them with skills well enough to turn them into job creators.

The retired sex workers acquired tailoring, catering skills among other practical courses as well as community morals to make them better examples to the future generation.

According to Director African Network for the Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN), Maj. Awich Pollar, the graduation of these girls will help to reduce the rate at which HIV/Aids has been eating up Kawempe division.

His comments follow a recent study which showed that about 2,148 female sex workers in Kampala of which 787 of them are in Kawempe division, especially in Kimombasa.
