Yesterday, 23rd March was harsh and fateful for Abaho David and Kilembeka John Mark, third year Makerere University students pursuing a Bachelors in Education.
The two who were in a group of four were chased by a mob of former guild aspirant Roy Ssemboga supporters from campus at the round about directing from Nkrumah hall to the University’s main library.
This happened just a few hours after the High Court directed the Makerere University Electoral Commission to swear in the Guild Presidential elect; Bazil Mwotta Biddemu- after it annulled the guild presidential elections in favour of Roy.
Roy’s disgruntled supporters who were more than 30 in number turned tables, chased four Education students who were on their way home; beating some up and causing injuries.
John Mark was placed under a car, injured and robbed of his wallet; money amounting to shs160,000 together with his two A.T.M cards and driving permit. His phone too was destroyed.
Abaho and John Mark were dressed in their red gowns and didn’t manage to run further enough like their other friends and so faced the wrath of the angry Roy supporters.
Abaho stated, “I was beaten and robbed of shs64.000, my red gown and my right shoe on our way back home.”
Abaho would have been telling quite a different story if the police officer had not come on time to rescue him.
Such crimes continue to increase and unravel amongst University Students especially in the dark hours of the day as some students attack and rob others for various reasons and we can only hope the law enforcement bodies and the Uganda Police do something about it.
