Like any other child who goes to school with a dream of fulfilling their weirdest dreams in the future, Zziwa Julius, a 24 year old finalist of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University was all goals and dreams before he was suddenly diagnosed with a brain tumor early this year.
Zziwa, who also doubles as a resident of Nsibirwa hall has for the last five years at the hall been known as a down to earth guy who is always calm and kind to his peers. Experts say the causes of such brain tumors are usually idiopathic but go ahead to note out risk factors such as genes, radiation, food among others.
Doctors at Mulago say that the tumor is in a very fragile area of the brain and have since referred that he is taken to India because of lack of equipment back home.
According to Dr. Muhumuza a senior consultant neurosurgeon, Zziwa had a history of progressive visual loss, headaches, nausea and occasional episodes of vomiting for about 9 months but a brain C.T scan conducted in January showed a homogeneously enhancing lobulated tumor in the pineal region.
He is currently surviving on antibiotics but will need about USD 15, 100$ to have a neuron navigation guided resection of the tumor.
Kigozi Enoc, a classmate, friend and general secretary of the #SaveZziwa campaign says that this figure is less the costs of accommodation, air tickets, and transport which if added totals to 25, 000 USD in order to grant Zziwa a life saving surgery.
