Despite the small population that has so far reported at Mbarara University, the question asked by most of these students today has been “where shall we eat food from?”
This is being caused by the recent demolition of the canteens that have been providing cheaper food to the students. According to the information provided by our reporter, most of the MUST students have resorted to eat from TASO village ghettos and Kashanyarazi restaurants which are in a distance less than a mile from the institution.
The venues above have been the best alternative to most of the students to get food which is estimated to be below 2500/= as compared to the food provided by the existing restaurant (Sippers) which provides the same food at a fee of 3500/=
“I have a low upkeep budget. My parents expect Mbarara to have relatively cheap food and to be able to stay within my budgetary provisions, I have to walk wherever cheap food is. I know there are risks associated, but I have to survive.” Sam Ssengendo, a second year student told Campus Bee.
Besides being a source of cheap food, restaurants in the areas of TASO village and Kashanyarazi are not in the best hygienic conditions and can lead to break out of various hygiene related diseases to the students fraternity. As we speak, it’s not yet established if there will be an emergency solution to provide food to the students.
