With just a few hours to the long-awaited fundraising event organised by former FDC Presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye with other MPs and intended to ‘raise’ salary arrears for Makerere lecturers, security has been beefed up at the university’s main gate.
According to ASP Denis Nyanzi Kasibante the OC Makerere University, Police have got an order from above to lock out any politician who intends to access the now-closed university.
The fundraise follows the 10-day ultimatum that Besigye gave to government on November 22, pestering for the reopening of the university whose lecturers went on a month ago, demanding for their salary arrears totaling to Shs 28billion.
According to Besigye and other few MPs that had bought his idea, they will today assemble in the university’s Freedom Square and collect money from well wishers so as to clear the said arrears.
But according to the current state of affairs at the university’s main gate, even staff without IDs are not allowed in. It’s unclear whether Besigye and his crew will be allowed into Makerere.
It is also reported that the same heavy deployment is at Besigye’s Kasangati-based home.
Yesterday, Besigye told the media at Najjanankumbi that after stakeholders’ meeting, they decided to call off the nationwide protest and opt for a fundraise, adding they had even notified the police.
The situation is still calm and students have been barred from accessing the university premises.
